Wayne Garner was elected as Mayor of Carrollton, Georgia in November of 2003.
Wayne Garner has lived all of his life in Georgia. He graduated from Douglas County High School and attended West Georgia College. He is married to Jerri Gray Garner and they have two children; Griffin and Emily.
Mr. Garner served in the Georgia State Senate from 1980 until 1993. During the time he served in the Senate, Mr. Garner chaired the Senate Committee on Corrections for approximately ten years. He was later named majority leader of the Senate and ultimately, President Pro Tempore. In April of 1993, Mr. Garner was appointed to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole by then Governor Zell Miller, where he served as Chairman. In December of 1995, Governor Miller named Mr. Garner to the position of Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he served for approximately five years. Upon leaving the Department of Corrections, KPM/PEAT Marwick conducted a forensic audit and said Commissioner Garner had built a prison system without peer in the Southeast. Mr. Garner is now President of the Garner Group, a governmental affairs firm located in Carrollton, Georgia, which conducts business in Georgia, Alabama, and Washington, D.C.
Mr. Garner currently serves on the Board of Directors at United Community Bank in Carrollton. He is Chairman of the Stone Mountain Authority; a member of the West Georgia Regional Airport Authority; and is a Board Member of Camp Sunshine. Wayne and his family are members of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church of Carrollton, Georgia.
Mayor Garner ran unopposed for the Mayoral post in November 2007 and was re-elected to an additional term. Mayor Garner ran again for the Mayoral post in November 2011 and was re-elected to a third term. His new term began January 1, 2012 and will expire December 31, 2015.
