Visitors Bureau launches new tourism mobile application UPDATE: Android version now available

The Carrollton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau announced this week that a free mobile device application it has produced featuring Carrollton/Carroll County tourism information is now available for download at the Apple App Store and Android App Store.

The application, or “app” for short, is built around a map with lodging, dining, shopping, events, attractions and other visitor information available at the touch of the screen of an Apple mobile device like iPhone or iPad or Android Smart Phones. The app can be filtered to show just one category of locations, all of them or a combination, with each location expandable to the visitor by simply touching the locator button on the map.

“We’re excited to have this new way to put our community’s attractions and amenities literally in the hands of our visitors,” said CVB Executive Director Jonathan Dorsey. “There’s always a need for printed brochures and visitor guides, but now we also have this fantastic marketing tool to help us promote our area as a destination to the growing segment of travelers using mobile devices.”

Dorsey said the app contains links to many websites including the CVB’s at www.visitcarrollton.com, making the app a fully-integrated component of the CVB’s online marketing strategy. This QR code will take you to the Apple App Store so you can download this FREE app today!

Downtown Carrollton's most famous feline fixture passes away @15

Chloe, the longtime feline resident of Horton’s Books & Gifts in Carrollton died at age 15 on Sunday, December 18, 2011.

A rescue cat that arrived at the doorstep of Horton’s owners in the summer of 1996, Chloe moved to the retail bookstore in the winter of 1997 and remained there until her illness necessitated her staying at her owner’s home.

Loved by many of the store’s customers, both adults and children, Chloe became a part of the store’s organization very quickly.  When the Carrollton  Times-Georgian ran a contest for its readers to identify the sales clerks in various downtown businesses, Chloe was the representative for Horton’s.  In addition, she added her name to a program where customers received points for purchases.  As part of her legacy, she became the symbol of the “Chloe’s Kids” reading and activity program that operated for several years.  She was also featured as one of the staff in the Georgia Public Broadcasting’s “Georgia Traveler” program in 2007.   When the store celebrated its 115 birthday, she was given status as a staff member in the nation-wide article written by the American Booksellers Association.

During her tenure as supervisor of all things Horton’s, Chloe welcomed visitors to explore the store with her.  On one occasion, she greeted a group as they alighted from their bus and led the group into to store.  She could also be found on a lap being petted as the customer read a book or magazine. It was also not unusual to see her perched on a shoulder as the customer walked around or sitting next to a student on the benches outside.  She considered the 400 quadrant of Adamson Square her turf and could be seen checking it out every morning then returning to her place on the rolling hassock in the children’s section.

Chloe also welcomed many writers who held book signings in the store.  Among the most familiar were:  Terry Kay, Mary Kay Andrews, Celestine Sibley, Grady Thrasher,  Zell Miller, Newt Gingrich, and Stanley Parkman.

As she grew older, the store began celebrate her birthday with parties to honor her part in the life of the community.  Parents and children attended the annual events to say Happy Birthday and partake of specially decorated cakes and participate in various games.

For the past four years, the “Chloe Fund,” established to provide books to children who would otherwise not receive them, has worked with various community organizations including the Carrollton Housing Authority, both public and private schools, and the Carrollton Kiwanis Club to further its goal.

Arrangements for her burial are incomplete at this time.
